CWS asks New Zealand churches to pray for those affected by Monday’s earthquakes and tsunami on Rendova and Tetepare Islands in the Solomons.
The 6.5 and 7.2 magnitude earthquakes resulted in tsunami. One hit the southern and northern side of Rendova, washing away the northern village of Retavo.
The islands lie 88km to the south east of Gizo, the main centre of the Western Province, which was hit by tsunami in 2007.
Homes and livelihoods have been affected. There are reports of minor injuries. The United Church of the Solomon Islands reports that hospital patients have been evacuated into their area. Assessment teams are currently in the region.
