Christian World Service welcomes the publication of Call Me Brother, the story of Dr Edric Baker who spent 35 years working as a medical doctor in Bangladesh. The new biography written by Kate Day shares his story and radical vision for an affordable healthcare system. Edric was a regular visitor to CWS on his trips back to Aotearoa New Zealand. The Kailakuri Health Centre which he set up was a partner of CWS for a number of years. CWS also contributed to the publication of this book.
For many years Edric was the only medically trained staff member. He lived as the people did and trained people from the surrounding community as paramedics. Although most had not attended high school, he taught them to treat diabetes and other common diseases as well as caring for patients in the hospital all at a very low cost. Kailakuri provides ‘healh by the poor, for the poor’ and sees more than 20,000 patients a year. Each day begins with prayers from the multifaith community.
Edric died in 2015 but his work lives on at Kailakuri and through this wonderful book.
Buy the book or e-book at kailakuri.com/biography. All proceeds will go to the Kailakuri Healthcare Project.
