Christian World Service is appealing for donations to help relief efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan after 7.5 quake at 2:09 pm 26 October local time.
The death toll currently stands at 382 with 2,368 reported injured. Thousands more have been left homeless. Initial assessments from CWS partner Community World Service Asia, indicate the people affected are in desperate need of food, winter kits, emergency health assistance and non-food items.
Freezing temperatures in both countries make the emergency response more urgent. Aid workers estimate 1.5 million people have been affected in the country.
The earthquake has affected people in 12 provinces of Afghanistan – some areas remain inaccessible because of landslides, road damage and disrupted communication networks. In Pakistan, the quake caused major damage in five provinces.
The Taleban is reported to have assured aid workers it will help to make sure people get the aid they desperately need in areas under their control.
Community World Service Asia has deployed rapid assessment teams in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The teams are working in close coordination with district authorities and other relevant stakeholders.
Community World Service Asia will immediately begin by distributing food aid and emergency health services in worst hit Shangla district, Pakistan. ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) is preparing to deliver relief in both countries where they have long established working relationships with local partners.
“Our partners urgently need funds to distribute food, blankets, medicine and other vital supplies to very remote areas where people are facing a bitter winter. They have the local knowledge to make sure help gets to those who need it most. If you can, please give,” says Pauline McKay, National Director.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the peoples of Afghanistan, northern India and Pakistan at this time.
