Methodist and Presbyterian Women are supporting Tongan women to rebuild and improve their livelihoods after the eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, a tsunami and Covid-19.  The Special Project will run until June 30, 2023.

The Special Project will support the work of the Amatakiloa ‘a Fafine, a network of village-based women’s groups.    The women work together to improve family livelihoods and their community’s well-being as well as prepare for future disasters.  Members share gardening knowledge and skills, repair rainwater systems, produce traditional products like fine mats, and know how to get things done.

The Special Project will support this locally driven work and explore ways to diversify income and strengthen livelihoods in the face of the climate crisis by:

• Expanding programmes to Vava’u
• Holding workshops to identify and confirm income-generating activities, followed up with a feasibility study
• Trialling and providing support to establish income generation activities.
