Middle East Instability, Human Suffering, and the Action of Regional partners
The Middle East is living through a season of profound upheaval. Conflict, political fragmentation, and economic collapse continue to shape daily life across Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and Yemen. For families already living in poverty, these overlapping crises have deepened hardship and eroded access to food, healthcare, education, and safe shelter. Christian World Service (CWS), together with our partners the ACT Alliance and the Middle East Council of Churches, remains determined to do all in our power to aid them by any actionable means possible in the tragic circumstances currently at play.
A Region Groaning Under the Weight of Injustice
Lebanon today offers one of the clearest windows into the region’s anguish. In a recent reflection, Professor Michel Abs, Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), described the situation with stark honesty: “Daily life in Lebanon has become a silent hell.”
Professor Abs notes that many Lebanese feel trapped between “adaptation or departure,” a posture of resignation born from decades of conflict and failed leadership. He writes that the people have grown accustomed to “the silence born of the acquired helplessness syndrome,” a phrase that captures the spiritual exhaustion of a nation waiting for justice.
He does not shy away from naming the internal wounds that have deepened the crisis: corruption, the collapse of public institutions, and the unresolved trauma of events such as the Beirut Port explosion in 2020. As he puts it, “Corruption, betrayal, the collapse of the moral order, and the absence of accountability are the basic elements behind the erosion of our social, cultural, economic, political, and security defences.”
Hopeful Witness in a Time of Darkness
Yet Professor Abs also lifts up the courage of those who stand for truth and peace. He honours leaders who “speak words of truth before tyrannical rulers,” even when they face vilification. He points to the Pope’s recent visits to Lebanon and Algeria as signs of hope—gestures that strengthen Christian presence, encourage dialogue, and affirm the dignity of all people.
Professor Abs reminds us that the peoples of the region “are, by instinct, inclined toward openness,” needing only a hand extended in genuine partnership.
Genuine partnerships: CWS’s Commitment and Practical Response
In this landscape of grief and resilience, Christian World Service continues to support communities through faith‑rooted, justice‑oriented partnerships.
As well as a long history of association with the Middle East Council of Churches, CWS continues to work closely with the ACT Alliance in the region. Both agencies remain determined to find ways to best navigate the current complexities befalling the Middle East.
How you can help
Your donations made here to our ongoing Middle East Appeal will be directed to our Middle East partners to join with donations being made from across the world. While we are not currently able to be specific about where a donation is applied in the region at this writing, we ask you to make your donation in faith that our Middle East partners will know how to put them to good use as they are best able in helping those caught in the hideous situation currently unfolding.
Also be assured we will be updating this page and our CWS site with more detail on how donated funding is applied as that information comes to hand.
