People are fleeing famine and war in Sudan
Sudan has been locked in a bitter war for more than 15 months, displacing an estimated 10.7 million people – the highest number ever displaced within a country. An estimated 25.6 million people – over half the population are facing acute hunger. The latest Famine Review Report says that a man-made famine is now spreading through Zamzam Camp near Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. People are hungry and in danger. In the last few weeks the onset of heavy rains and severe flooding is adding to their misery. Neighbouring countries like South Sudan are struggling to stretch very limited aid supplies for these new arrivals.
Please donate what you can today and help refugees arriving in South Sudan.
“These women are living in dire need lacking basic needs for their normal survival. Being new in the environment, with no source of income, no jobs and no proper shelter, the Refugees and Returnees are unable to provide basic needs like food, health, education and shelter for their children. This project aims to support them with some basic business skills and start up capital to empower them economically to provide all these basic needs.”
Mission for Sustainable Advancement
Our Response
Donations to the Sudan Appeal will support our local partner the Mission for Sustainable Advancement based in Maridi, South Sudan. Over 660,000 people have fled south as the hostilities increased and hunger spread. They arrive traumatised and with nothing. CWS is appealing for donations to help their urgent need. With your gifts, MSA can not only help single mothers find shelter for their children, but also establish gardens and set up small businesses so they can survive.
MSA is helping refugee and returnee families:
- by welcoming them and sharing information about the community
- by identifying single mothers with families who have no means of support. It will give them seeds, plants and training to start vegetable gardens and five days of business skill training. Start-up capital and on-going support will be provided to each woman who could start a tea or food stall.
MSA is an integral part of the Maridi community and has helped thousands of displaced people and returnees to resettle. It runs two preschools, health education programmes especially for young women and HIV and AIDS protection. CWS contributes to its scholarship, primarily focused on keeping girls in school, an HIV testing clinic and to local radio, MaridiFM
