Supporters Council

We look forward to welcoming you to this special Supporters’ Council to mark the 75^th anniversary of Christian World Service.  The first Christmas Appeal was launched by Archbishop West Watson in a letter to The Press in Christchurch on 15 December 1945.  In the letter, he appealed for funds for war-torn Greece and that tradition of international cooperation and partnership has continued ever since.

The Supporters’ Council is made up of partner churches, organisations and individuals committed to the vision, values and objectives of Christian World Service and who have provided financial support for CWS work in the past two years.

There will be an opportunity for supporters to review the past year’s work after Professor Tomb’s address.  Copies of the annual review will be available on the website or by hard copy at the meeting.

About the Speaker

Professor Tombs will reflect on CWS’s theological rationale: What might liberation theologies from the Global South offer to current reflection at CWS on ‘Who are we?’ Do these theologies belong only to the past?  Or do liberation theologies offer insights for the present and the future?

Professor Tombs is a lay Anglican theologian and the Howard Paterson Chair of Theology and Public Issues at the University of Otago, Aotearoa New Zealand. His work addresses religion, society, and ethics, and he has a longstanding interest in contextual and liberation theologies. Supporters’ Council representative on the Board

There is a position on the Board for a representative of the Supporters’ Council.  The Constitution requires that the person must have provided financial support for CWS’s work in the past two years and be seconded by someone who has also fulfilled this requirement.  The Board is keen to increase ethnic diversity and lower the average age of Board members.  To apply candidates need to send a covering letter outlining why they want to be on the Board and what skills and experience they will bring to it, together with a CV to Pauline McKay, National Director.  We require the names of two referees one of whom should be the person nominating the candidate.  Nominations must be received by Friday 16 October and will not be accepted from the “floor”.
