Send urgent support to Haiti
Almost half the population of Haiti is facing acute hunger. Gangs control as much as 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince, making transportation dangerous and often impossible. People live in constant fear and shelter in public spaces and schools when their homes are destroyed. An estimated 362,000 people have been displaced. Sexual assault, rape, kidnapping, and murder are common. Many Haitians doubt that the establishment of a Transitional Presidential Council and the arrival of United Nations peacekeepers will improve their daily lives. International funding is falling due to the difficult operating conditions in Haiti.
CWS is appealing for solidarity and support. Gangs block roadways and control movement in urban areas. They control access to food, schools and medical care in many areas. Our local partner works alongside existing community groups to overcome these obstacles where it can.
People need food, water and skilled psychosocial support.
If you can, please share make your donation today. Help people can eat. Give schools water. Support people traumatised by rape and violence to find healing.
Our Response
Donations to the Haiti Appeal will support our local partner Institut Culturel Karl Lévêque (ICKL) to respond to vulnerable people.
ICKL is supporting a community-based programme in La Saline where gangs have been attacking people since November 208. It is planning to help people with:
- expert and community-based psychosocial support
- food through a collective kitchen in at last one public space where displaced people are living.
- education about human rights
- community protection skills
- mentorship and tutoring for children who are unable to attend school.
ICKL has asked for funds to repair the rainwater system in two schools, recently damaged by gang violence in Belle Fontaine. Currently it takes over an hour for students to collect water from the closest river, down a steep hill.
