On October 7, 2023, the first earthquake hit the Herat province in western Afghanistan. The 6.3 magnitude was the first in a sequence of powerful and shallow earthquakes that have caused extensive damage. The earthquakes have affected an estimated 43,395 people and killed more than 2,400 people. More than two-thirds of homes have collapsed in the two worst-affected districts of Zindajin and Injil. People are sleeping outside. Winter is fast approaching.
CWS is appealing for urgent donations to help families with shelter, non-food items, food, hygiene items and psychosocial support.
Our Response
Our local partner ACT Alliance partner is already helping. It has distributed 100 winterised tents and is planning to provide more relief supplies. Plans are in place to distribute cash transfers of NZ$205 to female-headed households and those with older relatives, ill-health or who are living with a disability. The grants will be paid monthly for three months and are expected to last families for a month.
CWS is appealing for donations to provide winterisation kits and assistance with household rebuilds. It wants to give monthly grants to assist families who have lost their homes and livelihoods before winter sets in.
