Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti early on October 4, bringing heavy rains and causing major flooding.  Thousands of people have lost their homes and food crops to the category 4 storm.

ACT Alliance Haiti made preparations before the storm, helping people get to shelter and stocking up food supplies.  Local staff distributed the 1,500 hygiene kits and 500 shelter kits they had ready in Jacmel as well as food kits of rice, beans and corn in Ganthier.  The UN reports 1.4 million people need relief assistance in a region where 70% of people already lived in poverty. More than 800,000 people are extremely short of food.  Cholera is a major threat to people – there were 3,423 suspected cholera cases from 4 – 24 October.

Our partner Institut Culturel Karl Leveque (ICKL) has reported many of the peasant communities they work have been badly affected.  They are preparing to visit them and work out how best to support them.  They have asked for help to provide food, safe water, first aid supplies, and materials to rebuild homes and livelihoods.  ACT Alliance Haiti is assessing the situation in other areas and coordinating with other agencies to meet people’s needs.  ICKL and ACT Alliance Haiti will get help to people who will otherwise miss out.
