Libyans need urgent humanitarian aid

On September 10, Storm Daniel hit Libya, causing widespread damage.  More than 4,000 people have lost their lives and 8,000 are missing.  The catastrophic storm has affected almost 900,000 people across five provinces.

The city of Derna was devastated by flooding after reservoirs overflowed, destroying two dams.  The river Derna which runs through the city destroyed roads, bridges and buildings.    Access is difficult across the affected area.  Many areas are without electricity and safe water.

People have lost everything – more than 40,000 have been displaced.  They need food, water, shelter and more.

Our Response

Donations to the Libya Appeal will support Danchurchaid which has been working in Libya since 2011.

Danchurchaid is:

• working with the Libyan Red Crescent to support the Search and Rescue teams with personnel, equipment and transport
• providing food, water and blankets and assisting at emergency shelters run by local councils
• distributing sanitation and hygiene kits
• delivering medical supplies and assistance as well as psychosocial support
• ready to assist with demining and the clearance of unexploded ordnances dislodged by the floods as well as running education programmes on their danger.

In the longer term, Danchurchaid is planning to distribute cash transfers to families and assist them in providing shelter and the removal of rubble ahead of the winter.
