Officials estimate 33 million people – 1 in 7 – have been affected by severe flooding in Pakistan.  Over 1,000 people have lost their lives and one third of the country is under water.

Heavy rains and landslides have damaged 66 districts in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces to calamity levels.  This is likely to increase as rain continues to fall and water levels rise.  By last week 670,000 homes had been badly damaged or destroyed and nearly 800,000 livestock drowned.  Locals are saying flooding is worse than in the record-breaking 2010 floods.

As the situation worsens, more help is urgently needed.

Pakistan is eighth on NGO Germanwatch’s global climate risk index, a list of countries deemed most vulnerable to extreme weather caused by climate change.

We need your generous support to help flood-affected families and support them to rebuild their lives.

Our Response

Our local partner Community World Service Asia is coordinating its response with the government and other groups. Its emergency response team is making plans and preparing to start operations as soon as possible given the widespread flooding.

People urgently need food, clean water, hygiene supplies, tents and non-food items.

We’ve seen our own flooding in recent days in the Nelson region with more than 150 houses red-sticked and hundreds driven from their homes. While very distressing for those who are affected, this represents a very small fraction of our population and land mass. Imagine a country where 1/7^th of the population (more than 33 million people) is badly affected (countless homes destroyed), where over 1000 have died, and where 1/3^rd of the country is flooded. It’s easy from the comfort and relative safety of Aotearoa to simply look the other way. Christian World Service is inviting us to dip into our pockets to provide them the resources to channel to their local ‘on the ground’ partners, Community World Service Asia, to invest where the needs are greatest and the most significant help can be offered. I commend this appeal to you.
