Ni-Vanuatu need Supplies and Support

Vanuatu was hit by two magnitude 4.0 tropical cyclones from March 1-3.  Category four storms, Cyclone Judy followed by Cyclone Kevin produced strong winds and major flooding affecting most of the country and 250,000 people.  On March 13, the National Disaster Management Office reported the restoration of power and energy, communications, transport systems and shelter were the immediate priorities.  The eastern side of the country and the south have been most affected.  The level of damage and people’s needs are still being assessed.

People need food, new gardens and clean water.

Our Response

Donations will support the Vanuatu Christian Council.  The Council has set up and trained local committees to respond during disasters.  Churches assisted over 60 displaced persons with shelter, food, cooking implements, drinking water, hygiene kits and shelter items in Freswota, Port Vila.

VCC will respond in 18 communities in the North Efate Area Council and the Pele and Nguna Area Council as assigned by the National Disaster Management Office.  The Response will include:

• repair and upgrade latrines plus hygiene information
• plants and tools for new gardens
• re-establishment of community seed banks and nurseries
• training and support to protect children and prevent gender-based violence.
• education on evacuation procedures and on disaster preparedness.
• psychosocial support for adults and children.

It will give priority to women and girls with disabilities, older people and widows.
