Building resilience, mental health and wellbeing in Tonga — MWF Special Project 2026
In 2026, Christian World Service invites the Methodist Women’s Fellowship to help sustain a momentum of compassion by supporting long‑term, life‑changing work in Tonga. This year’s special project focuses on strengthening community resilience and improving mental health support across the islands.
Tonga faces some of the world’s most severe disaster risks, with women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities often the most affected. Many are excluded from key decisions that shape their safety and wellbeing. By partnering with the Tonga Community Development Trust, this programme ensures their voices are heard and their needs prioritised.
A central focus of the 2026 appeal is funding psychological first aid training—offered formally for the first time in Tonga. This crucial initiative responds to the trauma experienced after major events such as the 2022 Hunga‑Tonga‑Hunga‑Ha’apai eruption and aims to equip local women leaders to provide ongoing counselling and psycho social support in their communities.
The wider programme empowers women’s networks, strengthens disaster preparedness, expands livelihoods, and promotes inclusive community decision‑making. By investing in resilience—not just emergency response—Tongan communities gain the long‑term skills and systems needed to thrive despite increasing climate and economic pressures.
