From our Partner the Centre for Community Solidarity (CCS) in Uganda.
Over the last year 70 rainwater tanks have been successfully constructed in Uganda, resulting in:
- Improved health, hygiene and sanitation
- Establishing back yard gardens for green vegetables and seedling nurseries
- Improved quality and increased quantity of drinking water
- Increased micro-enterprises due to saved time
- Increased opportunities for children to attend school, with improved educational outcomes
- Increased number of local masons with skills in tank construction
For most recipient families, this is the first time they have had access to safe water. This results in a huge saving in time and energy previously applied to hauling potentially contaminated water over long distances. Now easier access to healthy water gives children more time to play, to revise their books or go to school. Giving their caregivers more time to attend their gardens for increased production of healthy food or to generate family incomes to address their other basic needs.
“The provision of safe, sufficient and reliable water and sanitation services has been central to building the wider resilience of our societies. CWS New Zealand’s continued support has been amazingly invaluable in creating opportunities for these young unfortunate boys and girls to access safe water at their homes, improve their health and attend schools or help them stay at home peacefully and comfortably”
