Thank you to everyone who has supported the people of Ukraine. After two years of this expanded war, the need for solidarity and support in Ukraine and neighbouring countries remains immense. Nearly 3.7 million people are displaced within the country and almost 6.5 million are living outside its borders. The signs of peace are few. We are grateful to everyone who has supported our appeal for Ukraine. CWS has already sent more than $314,000 firstly to relief efforts in Ukraine itself and then to assist refugees in Poland.
From Day One of the Russian offensive, ACT Alliance has been providing humanitarian support to people displaced by the war. At first, it was with food, water and shelter. Local ACT partners offered travel and work advice and provided child-safe spaces for people leaving their homes. Staff, volunteers, local churches and other organisations helped with cash grants, medicine, medical care and other support.
On February 1, two staff members from a local ACT Alliance partner were killed by drones in southeastern Ukraine. Another four humanitarian workers were injured in the attack.
With matching support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, CWS contributed fun for women and children in Poland. Local ACT partner the Lutheran World Federation assisted new refugees with cash grants, accommodation, language classes and employment. Psychosocial support has become increasingly important as families live with the fear and trauma of war and the new environment. Fathers and male family members have to stay in Ukraine.
Please remember the people of Ukraine and if you can, support our Ukraine Appeal to provide humanitarian relief.
Thanks to ACT Alliance and LWF/Albin Hillert for the images. Ukrainian women and children participate in group activities in Poland. Some are sheltering in buildings renovated by local churches to provide hospitality.
