Small Scale Fish Workers Determined to Stay

Small-scale fish workers are facing challenges from every direction on the coast of Tamil Nadu.  The climate crisis may prove the biggest but for now, they need to focus on survival.

By working very hard and together, they earn just enough to support their families – most are the sole income earners.

Muthamizh selvi has set up a small business with other women.

Now she wants to help women support their families and protect the sea, which is the source of their life.

• • business and vocational training for women
  • groups of women to set up small businesses to sell food, candles or other items
  • pay for data collection and analysis to use in legal hearings for 6 months
  • fund a business and leadership course for the cooperatives (from which the smaller groups are formed).

Sustainable Development Goal #14 of the United Nations addresses the way we use the oceans and seas.  It aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.  Its 7 indicators concern pollution, marine and coastal ecosystems, ocean acidification, fishing, conservation, fishing subsidies and access for small island states, small-scale artisanal fish workers and international law to create ‘the future we want’.
