On February 24, 2022 Russia launched a new attack on Ukraine. Two years later the war continues. Homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. Many people have lost their lives and been injured. There are 6, 479,700 refugees from Ukraine around the globe as of 15 February 2024. UNHCR estimates 3,689,000 people are displaced within Ukraine and 40% of the population need humanitarian support and protection.
The people need food, water, shelter, medical and psychosocial care, education and safety every day.

Our Response
We are working with local ACT partner, the Lutheran World Federation in Poland to:
- Child Safe Spaces including opportunities for games and crafts
- Women’s Safe Spaces where participants can meet others, find out about local services and learn Polish.
- Mental Health and Psychosocial support from trained staff.
- Some emergency assistance may be available as funding allows.

Give food, shelter and psychosocial careReporting Back
We are supporting the work of ACT Alliance in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. ACT Alliance is asking for support for work in Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova. ACT members distributed food, water, hygiene supplies and blankets as well as cups of tea and psychosocial support for people approaching the borders and new arrivals. Members are running information and resettlement hubs, shelters, and recreational facilities for children. Some cash support and health treatment is available.
CWS is grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a matching grant to assist refugees in Poland with our partner the Lutheran World Federation.

Church leaders from our partner churches in Aotearoa New Zealand are calling people to pray for the people and for peace.
“We follow the One who as a vulnerable child had to flee as a refugee in the face of tyranny. None of us can be unmoved by the scenes of devastation and suffering in Ukraine.
Christian World Service is our means as Anglican Christians to offer tangible support directly to partners in Ukraine. We strongly encourage you to give what you can and to pray unceasingly.” Archbishop Don and Archbishop Philip
