CWS is appealing for urgent donations to help families who have been devastated by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on June 22. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the quake and aftershocks.
The earthquake hit the Barmal, Ziruk, Nika, and Geyan districts of Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province most severely.
Reports and field assessments have confirmed widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, with almost up to 70% of homes completely and partially destroyed in some villages. The number of casualties is also expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continue in the rugged, remote terrain of the hard-hit districts.
Major relief efforts are ongoing to address the immediate needs which have been identified as emergency shelter, non-food items (NFIs), food assistance, hygiene kits, mental health and psychosocial support services, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) support. The possibility of cholera outbreaks is a particular concern.
Our Response
Our local partner Community World Service Asia sent an Emergency team to Geyan district immediately after the quake. The team are coordinating their response with national and district government officials.
Already 200 vulnerable families in 4 villages have received a cash transfer of NZ$152 to meet their immediate need for food, medical needs and other supplies. The grants have been allocated to female-headed households and those with older relatives, ill-health or are living with a disability. The grants are expected to last families for a month.
CWSA is asking for help to provide further monthly grants to these and many more families who have lost their homes and livelihoods
People need food, shelter and water.
