Fiji comprises 332 islands and atolls. Although a relatively high income country compared to its Pacific neighbours, 40-50% of the population is considered poor. Political instability since the May 2000 coup has exacerbated poverty, especially within vulnerable communities. Trade liberalisation is putting pressure on the garment manufacturing and sugar industries.

CWS’s partner in Fiji, the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy aims to increase community awareness and action on economic justice, social issues and conflict resolution. Activities include:

  • Living wage campaign
  • Voter education
  • Youth peace and development programmes
  • Training local peace facilitators
  • Community leadership
  • Working with people in newly forming informal urban settlements
