"I used to work as a domestic. Now with my own fruit trees I will be able to depend on my own work and not on people outside. I don’t want to depend on other people. I want to depend on myself"

— Sorroco Sanchez

Fiji

Population: 860,740
Capital: Suva
Life expectancy: 69 years
GNI per capita: $2,720
Literacy: 93%

Fiji comprises 332 islands and atolls. Although a relatively high income country compared to its Pacific neighbours, 40-50% of the population is considered poor. Political instability since the May 2000 coup has exacerbated poverty, especially within vulnerable communities. Trade liberalisation is putting pressure on the garment manufacturing and sugar industries.
