In Afghanistan, nearly 20 million people are facing acute food shortages.  According to UNICEF 28.3 million people need humanitarian assistance.  The combination of the challenging socio-economic and political situation, drought and conflict are making life extremely difficult.  CWS is raising funds to help refugee families in Pakistan.

Women and many girls are unable to work or attend school and university.  They are no longer able to work for non-governmental organisations, forcing international agencies to services and supplies.  There is not enough humanitarian relief for all the people who need food and other relief supplies.

Thanks to your recent generous support, CWS sent $90,000 which helped 203 families in Pakistan.  The new arrivals received a cash assistance grant for three months.

Our Response

Our local partner Community World Service Asia is supporting affected families in Afghanistan and  Pakistan.

Women and children are given priority, especially women-headed households, widows, differently-abled people, and those caring for orphans.  It provides cash assistance for 3 months to selected families by electronic transfer.

CWSA runs schools, including for girls (when able to attend), and provides psycho-social support through communities.  It is supporting families who lost their homes and livelihoods in the earthquake in June as well as running training programmes to improve local humanitarian response.  In Pakistan, it is assisting some of the many refugees who continue to cross the border.

ACT Alliance members have worked in Afghanistan for the last four decades.  Members have deeply rooted relationships with local people and are responding with:

• Emergency cash grants
• Food
• Safe drinking water and sanitation
• Schooling
• Non-food items including Covid protection kits
• Winterisation and shelter
• Establishing new livelihoods
• Healthcare
