Cyclone Gaja struck Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and 4 more districts of Tamil Nadu state on 15/16 November. More than 60 people were killed by the storm and 821,948 were evacuated from low lying areas. The torrential downpours and winds gusting up to 120 kilometres per hour destroyed homes and livelihoods. Fishing boats and equipment, fruit trees and other crops, and livestock have been destroyed. Villages have lost electricity, water supply and roads in the storm.
Our partners Neythal/LAW Trust and SNEHA are based in Nagapattinam. Neythal/LAW Trust is requesting urgent donations to provide dry rations for 2,000 fishing families and 500 school kits for children who have yet to receive help in Thuiruvarur.
$50 will buy a dry ration pack for a family including rice. tamarind, spices, oil, salt, sugar, tea, milk powder, dal, biscuits, garlic, matches, mosquito coil, shampoo, candle, soap, and toothpaste.
$25 will buy a school kit.
